WILDLIFE CONSERVATION AND THE LIVING UNIVERSITY

The 'living university' is an initiative of the Akassa Development Foundation  (ADF) which provides experiential learning opportunities to communities,  institutions and Organizations within and outside Akassa by showcasing the participatory community development processes adopted and practised by the Akassa people to drive their own development.

The concept teaches people how to develop communities through the bottom-up approach which ensures everyone has an input in decisions that affect their livelihood.

In the course of the programme,  the Akassa Coast Conservation Initiative also known as the Tutle club was formed and empowered to implement natural resource component in the Akassa territory since 1998.

Notably..the group recorded major successful achievements;

● Formation of wildlife committees to better manage the turtle conservation efforts.
● Formulation of the Akassa wildlife Regulation in 1998. A local natural resource law which was first of its kind.
● Created ACCI, responsible for formulating biodiversity conservation regulations for protection of three endemic species of marine turtle existing within Akassa Coastal territory.
● Established turtle observatory station for turtle-watching, tracking, surveillance and protection of breeding sea turtle by the club.
● Organised World Environment Day programmes in collaboration with Bayelsa state government.

Note: The Akassa Development Foundation  (ADF)..a community-based Organisation (CBO) provides responsible corporate governance in the management of the Akassa Development Programme through the Board of Trustees and the Management team with the General Assembly providing inclusive participation and ownership.

Baseline:: Raynus Henry Ebiegberi is proud to share these self reliance and sustainable  success stories of the Akassa people with so many recognitions and awards.

At the ADF...we pioneer sustainable community-led development in the Niger Delta.
