Akassa Forest Reserve

Akassa forest is one of the major forest reserves of the Niger Delta region for bird watching. There are over 69 species of birds recorded and the reserve is one of the most important roosting areas for wintering pale arctic waders and terns in southern Nigeria. The reserve comprises three low-lying blocks of lowland forest much of which is seasonally flooded but the coastline has some stretches of sandy beaches. Common trees found in the reserve are Rhizophora racemosa, Avicennia africana, Rafia palms and oil palms (Elaeis guineensis).

Common birds associated to the forest include Sooty Flycatcher (Musaicapa infuscate), Purple-Headed Glossy Starling (Lamprotornis purpureiceps), Damara Tern (Stema balaenarum) ,Common Tern (Sterna hirundo). The reserve has a land area of 7,200hectares located in Brass local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
